Black Hills by Nora Roberts

This selection is for the Color Coded Reading Challenge. Of course the color is: 6. A book with "Black" or any shade of Black (Jet, Ebony, Charcoal, etc) in the title.  Even though Nora Roberts is considered a "romance" author there is usually a mystery or crime in the story.

This story begins with 11 year old Cooper Sullivan.  His selfish parents want some vacation time without him, so they send him to South Dakota for the summer.  His grandparents are so happy to have him there.  But it is hard for him because NYC is all he knows.
He meets 10 year old Lil.  He finds out that she loves baseball as much as he does.  They are out behind the barn at her parents place, playing ball and they see a cougar. Lil falls in love!  She was to dedicate her life to wild cats!  They spend the summer together and then he returns to NYC.

He continues to come back to his grandparents farm.  When Lil is 18, she seduces Cooper and their love story begins.  But is doesn't really last.  Lil's other dream comes true and she opens a refuge for wild cats.
Coop starts his career in law enforcement.
Then in 2009, Coop's grandfather falls and breaks his leg in 2 places.  Coop has had enough of the big city and sells everything and goes back home - or the only place he has ever felt like home! He finds out that Lil has just come home from a trip.  He thinks she is engaged but she is not.  They start to rekindle their romance and a crazy person enters their life and starts killing.

Here's an excerpt.
