Dragonwyck by Anya Seton

I know I read this wonderful book years ago but I just had to read it again.  Someone on the Historical & Time Slip Novels Book Club on Facebook mentioned they were reading it.
This book was published in 1944.

The Story:  Miranda Wells leaves her home on a farm on Connecticut to be a governess for a distant cousin, Nicholas Van Ryn.  She becomes enchanted with him and his way of life. She envies the luxury and ease that she had not had in her life before coming to Dragonwyck, a huge mansion where they live. After a few months, his fat lazy wife, Johanna dies suddenly.  Nicholas proposes to her and tells her to keep it a secret and he will come for her in a year. He does and life is not exactly what Miranda was hoping for.....

Pages: 336

This book was made into a movie in 1946 starring Vincent Price and Gene Tierney, who is one of my favorite actresses from the 40's.
