Mistress of My Fate (The Confessions of Henrietta Lightfoot #1) by Hallie Rubenhold
This is the first book that I have read by Hallie Rubenhold. It was in the new section at the library and it looked like something I would like. I did, although the beginning is a bit weird. It starts as a sort of diary and assumes that you know who the writer is. I did not like the ending but then realized there will be another book.
The Story: Henrietta was taken into her uncle's household at a young age. She grew up in the shadow of her shallow selfish cousin, Lady Catherine. Lady Catherine enters into society an throws herself at men and then quickly loses interest in them. Two years later, she falls in love with Lord George Allenham who falls in love with Henrietta. Henrietta also loves George but spurns him to no avail. He proposes to Catherine. Somehow Catherine finds the letter he wrote to Henrietta, who was stupid to not burn them. Catherine gets ill and dies. The household believes Henrietta is responsible because she loves Allenham. Lord Stavourley tells Henrietta that he understands Allenham's love for her. He burns the letters and tells Hetty that he is her father. He tells her who her mother was and how he plans to marry Hetty to a creepy man. Hetty runs away from home and her troubles begin there.
