CONNECTIONS 2016 - 2017

Crazy Challenge Connection discussion on goodreads

CONNECTIONS CHALLENGE
DURATION: October 1, 2016 - September 30, 2017

This challenge is all about connections. Each book you read must be connected to the previous book, either by one or more words in their titles, author first or last name or publication date. Books must be linked in chronological order! The second book you read MUST be completed after your first book, but before your third book, and so on down the list.

For example: If my first book is Them Bones, by Carolyn Haines, the next book I read would need to have "Them" or "Bones" in the title, be written by an author with "Carolyn" or "Haines" in his/her name, or be published in 1999. If I read Death On Demand, by Carolyn Hart, for my second book, my third book could be Iron House, byJohn Hart, published in 2011, and my fourth could be Crunch Time, by Diane Mott Davidson, published in 2011.

You may read two consecutive books by the same author, but no more until you read something by a different author. A, An and The do NOT count for connecting words, but all other title words will be accepted. If you are using the year of publication, it must be the year the book was originally published, no matter what edition you read now. You may only use the publication date for two consecutive books, then you'll need to match a title word or author name before matching publication date again.

When you sign up for the challenge, please choose your level of participation. As the challenge progresses, you may move up to the next level if you'd like.

Level 1: 8 books
Level 2: 9 – 16 books
Level 3: 17 – 24 books
Level 4: 25 – 30 books
Level 5: 31 or more books

PLEASE NOTE:
Series names do NOT count for this challenge. However, if a subtitle is part of the Goodreads link for that book, that would be accepted. For example: When you search Goodreads for The Reading Promise, by Alice Ozma, you get The Reading Promise: My Father and the Books We Shared. In this case, you could also work with "My Father and the Books We Shared."

Words must match exactly -- no plurals, possessives, etc. unless that's the form of the word in the title.

When matching author names, only first and last names can be used, not middle names.

Regional variations in spelling -- i.e., color and colour -- will be allowed in book title words only, not author names, except as noted below.

You may connect a word in the title with an author's name – i.e., The Once and Future KING and a book by Stephen KING – but the words must match exactly. For the authors' names, if the first name is pronounced the same, with only one different letter – i.e., Carl and Karl – we'll take it. Last names, however, must match exactly.

EXAMPLES:
Let's say you've read Curiosity Thrilled the Cat
Books that CAN be matched to "Cat" in this title include:
What the Cat Saw ("Cat" in the title)
Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World ("Cat" in the sub-title)
Books that canNOT be matched to "Cat" include:
Cat's Eye (the possessive form of "cat")
The Cats that Surfed the Web (plural form of "cat")
Catnap (a compound word)

If you read Cross-Country Cat, you can use these books to match the title:
The Cross-Country Quilters
The Water Lily Cross ("Cross" in title)
In a Sunburned Country ("Country" in title)
Pope Joan, by Donna Woolfolk Cross (author's last name is Cross)

CHALLENGE RULES

♣ When you sign up for the challenge, please post a challenge template so we have a post to which to link your name; post #2 will list participant links which can then be used for making challenge updates.

♣ For each book you read, please indicate the title, the author and the date you finished reading it. If a challenge task gives several options, please make it clear which option you’ve chosen. If the task calls for an item on the cover, include a link to the book cover.* If it’s not obvious from the book title or cover, be sure to explain how your book fits the task. If you don’t, you won’t get credit for completing that task.

♣ Unless otherwise noted, books must be at least 150 pages long.

♣ Books may only be used for one task in this challenge, but cross-challenge posting is encouraged!

♣ If you choose any of the spelling options, you may use the first letter of the first word in the book’s title (excluding A, An and The) or the author’s first or last initial (middle names or initials can NOT be used).

♣ If you want the challenge moderator to check your progress as you make updates, please copy/paste your update into a new message . We don't have time to scroll back through the entire thread looking for "message #15," or to follow links back to an original post.

♣ When you complete the challenge, please post your entire list as a new message to make it easier for everyone to see what you've read. If you don't repost your list, you won't be included in the list of those who have completed the challenge.

*If you don’t know how to post a link to the book title or cover, see the instructions here: Link Instructions
